The Vector – Black Limba & African Padauk End-Grain Cutting Board

The Vector began with a deceptively simple challenge: create an intricate, dimensional end-grain cutting board using only two original pieces of hardwood.

The result is a one-of-a-kind piece of functional art handcrafted from Black Limba, also known as Korina, and African Padauk.

Measuring approximately 15 3/8" × 13 1/2" × 1 3/4", The Vector has the substantial weight and presence expected from a premium butcher block while showcasing a geometric pattern that looks far more complex than the materials from which it began.

Naturally Dramatic Black Limba

Black Limba is the centerpiece of this board.

Its warm golden and caramel tones are interrupted by dramatic charcoal-black mineral streaks, flowing grain, and naturally occurring variations that make each section completely different from the next.

Rather than attempting to create uniformity, the design intentionally uses those variations. Pieces are rotated and repositioned throughout the pattern, transforming the natural figure of the wood into a constantly changing mosaic.

Running between them are thin lines of African Padauk, whose naturally rich red color creates the distinctive zig-zag pattern that gives The Vector its name.

No stains or artificial coloring are used to create this contrast. Every color, line, and variation comes from the hardwood itself.

Crafted From Just Two Pieces of Wood

What makes The Vector especially unusual is not simply what you see—it's how it was made.

The entire board began with only two pieces of 2-inch-thick hardwood: one Black Limba and one African Padauk.

Through a carefully planned sequence of cutting, rearranging, rotating, gluing, resurfacing, and repeating the process, those two pieces were transformed into the geometric end-grain pattern you see today.

The Padauk lines continue through the surface and around the edges of the board, revealing the construction from virtually every viewing angle.

It's a design that rewards a closer look.

Built to Be Used

Despite its appearance, The Vector isn't intended to be wall art.

Its end-grain construction creates a substantial cutting surface designed for serious food preparation while allowing knife edges to work between the exposed wood fibers rather than repeatedly cutting across them.

At approximately 1 3/4 inches thick, the board has the mass and stability of a traditional butcher block.

A precision-routed perimeter juice groove provides additional functionality for carving meats, preparing fruit, and everyday kitchen work, while generously rounded edges and corners give the board a refined, furniture-quality profile.
